The narrative follows JaRed, a small mouse hero nicknamed “Runt” who lives in the underground city of Tira-Nor. “Unfortunately, a seer has anointed him to be the next king, when all JaRed wants is to protect his family and friends.” The tyrant king SoSheth exiles and hunts JaRed, who becomes trapped between royal assassins and a villainous rat leader named Kreeg. “Becoming evil is the worst thing that can happen to you” guides JaRed’s moral struggle as his city faces invasion. This sequel to the award-winning first book combines adventure with themes of meaning and identity amid adversity.
