This scholarly work examines whether early Christian hymns are preserved within New Testament texts. Gordley investigates hymnic patterns found in Greco-Roman and Jewish worship traditions, asking how to identify and interpret such compositions in scripture. The book analyzes christological passages like Philippians 2:6-11, Colossians 1:15-20, and John 1:1-17 as potential hymnic texts. Gordley posits that “within the crucible of worship the deepest and most searching texts of the New Testament arose,” offering fresh perspectives on early Christian worship practices and theological development.
