Choosing a Telugu Bible: A Guide for Telugu-Speaking Christians

Telugu Bibles come in many sizes, prints and bindings, plus Telugu–English parallel editions. Here is how to choose the right one for church, home, study or a gift.

Telugu is one of the most widely spoken languages in India, and Telugu-speaking churches across Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and around the world have a rich tradition of Bible reading, preaching and worship songs (keerthanalu). For many believers, reading Scripture in Telugu — the language they pray and dream in — makes God’s Word feel close and personal.

If you are buying a Telugu Bible for yourself, a family member or your church, this guide will help you choose.

Why read the Bible in your mother tongue?

Many Telugu Christians read English well, yet still find that a Telugu Bible speaks to them differently. Familiar words carry emotional weight, verses learned in childhood come back easily, and it is simpler to read aloud with parents and grandparents during family prayer. A Telugu Bible also makes it easier to follow the Scripture reading in a Telugu-language service.

Types of Telugu Bibles

Standard text Bibles

The most common Telugu Bible is a complete Bible (Old and New Testament) with the text only, sometimes with a few maps. These are affordable and ideal for daily reading and church.

Large-print and giant-print editions

Telugu script has many detailed letter forms, and small print can be tiring to read, especially for older readers. Large-print editions are worth the extra size and weight for anyone who reads for long periods or whose eyesight is weakening.

Pocket and compact editions

Small Bibles that fit in a bag are useful for students, travellers and people who want a Bible with them every day. The print is smaller, so check that it is comfortable for the reader.

Pulpit editions

Large, sturdy Bibles designed to sit on a church pulpit or family table, with big print that is easy to read while standing.

Telugu–English parallel (diglot) Bibles

Parallel Bibles print Telugu and English side by side, usually in two columns. They are excellent for:

  • families where parents read Telugu and children study in English;
  • preachers and translators who speak to mixed-language congregations;
  • anyone learning to read Telugu or English better;
  • comparing the meaning of a verse in two languages.

Telugu New Testaments

New Testaments (often with Psalms) are lighter and cheaper, and are popular for outreach, evangelism and giving to new believers.

Who publishes Telugu Bibles?

The Bible Society of India has published Telugu Bibles for many years and offers a wide range of sizes, prints and bindings at affordable prices. Other Christian publishers and ministries also produce Telugu Bibles, study Bibles and children’s Bibles. When buying, check the publisher and edition in the book details so you know which text you are getting — churches often have a preferred edition.

Choosing the right binding

  • Hardcover: strong and economical, good for home and church shelves.
  • Vinyl or imitation leather: flexible, water-resistant and comfortable to carry.
  • Genuine leather: long-lasting and pleasant to hold; a special gift for weddings, baptisms or ordinations.
  • Zip covers: protect thin Bible paper when carried daily.

Telugu Bibles as gifts

A Telugu Bible is a meaningful gift for:

  • parents and grandparents (choose large print);
  • a newly baptised believer;
  • a newly married couple (a family Bible with record pages);
  • pastors and evangelists (a pulpit or parallel edition).

Beyond the Bible: Telugu Christian books

Alongside Bibles, Telugu Christian literature includes song books (keerthanalu), devotionals, Bible study guides, children’s story books, testimonies and theology. Song books are especially loved, as many congregations sing from them every Sunday. Browse our Telugu collection to see what is available.
