This book provides an accessible overview of historical and theological developments spanning five centuries between the Old and New Testaments. It examines four crucial periods in post-exilic Israel: the Persian (539-331 BC), Hellenistic (332-167 BC), Hasmonean (167-63 BC), and Roman (63-4 BC) eras. The work refutes the common notion of “four hundred years of prophetic silence” by utilizing both biblical and extra-biblical sources to reconstruct Judean and Samaritan history. An epilogue addresses the historical and theological context at Herod’s death in 4 BC, establishing essential background for understanding New Testament writings.
