Radner’s theological work examines “the foundations and methods of the figural reading of Scripture,” reintroducing “a traditional approach to biblical interpretation that dates back to Jewish practice.” The volume explores how this interpretive method, prominent through the early church and Middle Ages, fell from favor with historical criticism’s emergence. The text analyzes theological presuppositions underlying figural reading while examining concrete doctrinal applications, concluding with four sample figural sermons from across the centuries.
